Technical skill

The “golden standard” for assessment of technical skills is by direct observation of surgical procedures using validated global rating scales and procedure-based checklists. Numerous publications have confirmed the validity and reliability of this approach. This method of assessment, however requires trained observers in the OR for live observation, or post-surgery (via video recordings). This requirement for qualified manpower significantly impacts the feasibility of the method and limits its translation form research environment to clinical practice. In recent years, the development of new techniques for the assessment of technical skills has provided immediate and objective feedback to trainees without the need for direct human observation. Such techniques include hand motion analysis, eye and gaze metrics, and instrument tracking.
